How does dental insurance work?

PPO dental plans are relatively inexpensive and they usually cover your cleanings and basic preventive procedures. Procedures are typically grouped into 3 categories when it comes to coverage - preventive, which are usually covered 100%, like cleanings, x-rays or sealants, basic and major. Usually the dentist will submit the claims for you and receive the insurance portion of the payment. Sometimes the insurance pays way later or not enough for different reasons, and that usually becomes Patient's responsibility. You should work with an "in-network" dentist, but most are, so it's usually easier to find your dentist searching online, on reviews apps like Yelp or Google Maps and Nextdoor or ask friends, than on your insurance's website. We find those to be wildly outdated, and include dentists who moved from the area years ago.

How to get whiter teeth?

How can you get your teeth whiter, how hard is it and how much does it cost? Well, you'll be surprised how easy, comfortable and inexpensive it is compared to the value you get! You can try different whitening products you can buy at the drug store, but they only go that far. They work best to maintain your white teeth after you whitening procedure. They hardly go in between teeth or close to the gums, and you'll see the yellower shade there. So the best way to do it is in a dental office, and let the professionals take care of this. Is it expensive? Some dentists offer free Zoom teeth whitening for new Patients, some charge up to a couple hundred dollars or so. It's totally worth it for the benefits you get, absolutely!

Turn The Tide on Opioids

We signed the pledge to #TurnTheTide on opioids on https://TurnTheTideRX.org, a site supported by the Surgeon General of the US, Cigna and other big names. You know there is something going on and there is a better chance to make things happen when the big hats get involved. We believe in avoiding pain in the first place if possible, that's why we start with Laser surgery to reduce post-operative pain whenever possible. And we don't prescribe opioids anyway unless absolutely necessary and they are the LAST resort in managing pain.

Clean your tongue

Brushing twice a day and flossing are great habits, but we also need to brush our tongue too once in a while to prevent bad breath. You can use use the bristles of your toothbrush or you can try a specialized brush with a built-in tongue cleaner on the back, like the Colgate 360 and others.

Let's talk about what everyone is talking about: marijuana will be legal in 2018

The beginning of 2018 brings something new and special in California, among other things: many people might not think about it or be prepared but recreational marijuana will be legal. It was already legal for medicinal purposes and let's be honest anyone who wanted a prescription got one. What does change from a dental care point of view? Not much and also a lot when it comes to treating every Patient's specific needs...

Dental care benefits use stays flat

Here is some interesting data: More adults have dental benefit coverage, and fewer adults report cost as a barrier to dental care, yet the number of dental visits tends to stay flat. Percentagewise, the number of adults who said they visited a dentist in the past 12 months stayed flat for several years, which could be «a new normal« for dentistry and apparently no one knows why. We seem to be in this very sluggish, flat dental care use trend despite good insurance coverage and even lower costs, something's not adding up.

I think most dentist are in a routine to keep their Patients happy enough so they come back for regular cleanings every 4-6 months or so. And they don't tackle issues like teeth whitening, veneers or even implants so they don't scare Patients away. That's why when we get New Patients who tell us that they had regular cleanings for years we can't help but ask: And no one told you that you could get a teeth whitening that would improve your smile dramatically in like half an hour for relatively little cost to you? Well, no wonder this Patient didn't want to go back to their old dentist any more!

Your healthcare and FSA benefits might expire at the end of the year! Again!

Yes, it's that time of the year again! When every dental office reminds everyone that their healthcare and their Flexible Spending Account FSA benefits might expire at the end of the year! It's a cliche and it could become annoying as it pops up on -insert your favorite social media account here - when you scroll up on your new iPhone X! Yet it's amazing how many people leave money on the table, even after all the emails, calls and texts that pretty much every medical or dental office sends out! And probably that's why they try everything else out there to get the message out! It's a lose-lose situation, when it could actually be a win-win!

Most of the excuses we hear involve the lack of time to take care of this, which is completely understandable in today's fast pace life. Most people don't have time to check their dental or medical insurance for remaining funds. We can't argue with that but we have a solution for it: email or call us and we'll check it for you! Chances are that we can do it while we have you on the phone, there is software today that can retrieve your benefits in real time, and we have it! Worst case scenario - and that's not that bad really - we'll have to call you back with an answer or email you the details.

The other excuse we hear a lot is - I can't take time off from work. Well, you most likely have sick days available, that's what they are for! For when you are sick and when you have a doctor appointment. You can plan the dentist appointment in advance and request a few sick hours to take care of it. Your employer should understand that you want to take care of your health or improve your smile and that makes you a happier, more productive, less grumpy employee in return! Can they say no to all that? If you work in Aliso Viejo we are conveniently located in the Town Center, most likely a 5 minutes drive from anywhere.

The last excuse we'll mention here is - I don't have any problems, no tooth hurting, why would I go to the dentist? Oh boy, how much time do you have to talk about this? We'll make it short, in a nutshell: most Patients have proposed or recommended treatments that are not a priority and end up down the line in the list. But that doesn't mean they are not necessary, they also contribute to a #BrighterSmile, and besides, they might be covered by free money from your insurance! So why not take advantage now before it gets busy towards the end of the year?

Halloween is always scary for Dentists!

Halloween means candy, all kinds of sweets and more sugar loaded treats (besides the fun stuff and the dressing up in sometimes funny costumes and parties!) Everyone gives out candy, businesses and offices have trays and bowls full of attractive sweets, for kids and adults alike. Dental offices have struggled with this since forever, because it's at least odd if not unethical to offer candy and sweets since they are perceived as the main cause of why you are in a dental office in the first place! We've seen and done all kinds of programs - from candy buy-back and donating to troops - all laudable but they still won't fix the problem of not offering candy while everyone else does!
Well, until now! This year...

Paperless office

Since dental (and medical) office upgraded from paper charts (you might be too young to remember those huge cabinets filled with folders and papers, some offices still use those, believe it or not!) to computer software - everything got easier, searchable, automated, digitally manageable. Well, almost everything, since some forms and papers were hard to almost impossible to replace, the right technology wasn't there yet. Since the tablets became mainstream the developers started incorporating them into the dental software, but it was a slow, hard process. It wasn't until very recently that this process became seamless and actually effective, and even today only a few offer this option for their dental software...

Questions to ask your dentist about dental amalgam waste

"Dental amalgam waste is a significant contributor of mercury discharges to municipal wastewater treatment facilities," up to 40% according to the multiple sources. According to a recent EPA ruling, starting on July 14, 2017 new dental offices will be required to install an amalgam separator, while existing dental offices will have until 2020 to comply. Needless to say, Aliso Viejo Dental has one installed for almost 2 years now, effectively stopping toxic waste in amalgam traps that are collected monthly and recycled together with sharps and other biohazard materials, typically disposed by dental offices......

There is an increasing interest into an active process of making choices toward a healthy and fulfilling life and of becoming aware, rather than treating sickness. Preventing is easier and cheaper, not to mention better for you and as a life choice than treating an illness after it occurs. Wellness is more than being free from illness, it is a dynamic process of changing and growth and staying away from getting sick in the first place.

Maintaining an optimal level of wellness is an important part of living a higher quality life. Everything we do and every emotion we feel relates to our well-being. The other side of the coin is true too, our well-being directly affects our actions and emotions, it's an ongoing cycle. We need to achieve optimal wellness in order to minimize stress, reduce the risk of illness and ensure positive interactions and relations.....

SOKA International Festival

No matter how many of our Patients come from cities far away, or after they move, there is always a local component to every Dental office. You are part of your local community after all and we are lucky to belong to Aliso Viejo, one of the nicest, safest, most vibrant communities in Orange County! The people here are involved in local activities and they care about daily events. And there is a lot going on all the time, a lot of our local residents are excited about the new additions to the Town Center - the new 5Below store that just opened and the new 9Round gym that is going to open soon! (we are still waiting on the Urban Plates and Pieology that are due this summer). There is also the annual Taste of Aliso Niguel fundraising event that benefits ANHS, but we see it as an evening of fun, good food, drinks and a good chance to get to know local restaurants and businesses better and meet locals. But probably the most exciting local annual event is the SOKA International Festival that locals love! This is a big event that involves the students from the local SOKA University, local businesses, city officials, lots of crafts and arts, and performers! This brings AlisoViejans together like nothing else because of the multitude of ethnic food options, local businesses promotions and opportunities to get in touch with people from a diverse background.....

"I already have a Dentist!"

Attended a couple of venues last week where we had a booth and had a great opportunity to talk to a lot of people! We handed out info and coupons, gave more information to interested potential Patients and explained how we practice dentistry differently than most other Dentists. We explained this because the most common excuse we heard for not taking our free brochure, tooth brush/paste promo bag or coupon we handed out was "Thank you, but I already have a Dentist". Well, most people do and some follow their 6 months Hygiene schedule almost religiously. But unless a tooth hurts or something is bothering them - they never have any improvements for their smiles - like, ever! The Dentist should recommend any necessary treatment or even possible cosmetic improvements....

Do you have Dental Phobia or Dental Anxiety?

"When confronted with fear of the dentist chair, our minds run wild by conjuring the most terrifying experiences. By staying in the present moment, we can avoid conjuring these worst case scenarios, and instead remain in a calm and centered place." - Dr. Fern White, Australian Dentist

The fear or anxiety of going to the dentist is more common than you think. A lot of people postpone as much as they can or just hate going to the dentist and get chills when they book an appointment, so if you experience this - you are not alone. People with dental phobia often put off routine care for years or even decades, they'll even put up with gum infections, pain, or even broken and unsightly teeth.

But chances are that your old bad experience will never happen again, here's why: First of all, dentistry has changed a lot in the last few years, so whatever bad experience you might have had in the past - it might not be an issue any more. We use Lasers now even for Hygiene procedures, they require less or no anesthesia and you are healing faster, so ask if your procedure can be done using a Laser tool when booking your appointment.

Healthy Eats For The Sports Game Party

OK, we don't want to kill the buzz for the sports enthusiasts out there, most likely their smile was the last thing on their mind on a big game night. Because there is a time to care for your oral health and brush and floss (like, all the time!) and there is a time to have fun and enjoy a game with your friends! Fortunately, there are plenty of snacks ideas that are actually good for your teeth and your health overall.

Raw Veggies with Hummus or Guacamole is one of them. Depending on your available time or cooking skills you can make the guac or just buy some that is freshly made with natural ingredients. Also buy some raw vegetables like carrots, celery, peppers, or cucumbers, they go great with both hummus or guacamole and you can skip the chips. These vegetables also help clean your teeth while you are eating.

(Almost) 7-layer Dip - who says it has to be exactly 7 layers? Use whatever you like....

Sugar is bad for your overall health

You are probably in shock right now about this title LOL! Who are we kidding, everyone knows that sugar is bad for you, but few people know HOW bad, or that added sugar is present in pretty much everything we eat or drink. It's common knowledge that sodas contain a lot of sugar and we should stay away from them, but did you know there is almost as much sugar in "freshly squeezed" Tropicana or Minute Maid orange juice? Yeah, keep reading! Most orange juice comes from Brazil, not Florida, and even "not from concentrate" orange juice is heated, stripped of flavor, stored for up to a year, and then re-flavored and sugar added before it is packaged and sold!
You probably heard your Dentist saying that sugar is bad for your teeth, but surprisingly sugar does not directly cause tooth decay. It's the acid caused by bacteria in your mouth after sugar intake that eventually leads to tooth decay. And this process occurs due to plaque - a sticky film of bacteria covering your teeth and gums, so it takes a while. And if you brush and floss regularly you can minimize the effects drastically!
When sugar comes in contact with the plaque on your teeth it produces the acid and causes a small hole in your enamel. When you don't brush or floss your teeth regularly, this hole grows bigger and develops....

The Health and Looks of your teeth and the perceived social status

Besides your regular cleaning, what is the most common reason you go to the dentist? Tooth hurting? Well, it's a good time to make an appointment with Aliso Viejo Dental because the health of your teeth is starting to become a social status too.
Good teeth have always been an indicator of good hygiene and health, but lately it's also an indicator of how wealthy you might be. Recent studies even show that bad teeth might hamper social mobility or status for certain people as rising healthcare costs directly affect people and how they have access to dental treatment or orthodontists or if they would pay for Cosmetic Dentistry. Those studies show that people who cannot afford these types of procedures or dental care are being "left behind" and might even be discriminated against because of the health or beauty of their teeth. Actually, this seems to become a new unnoticed discrimination when it comes to job security and social status, according to several studies conducted by social scientists.
When researchers digitally manipulated the teeth and smiles of subjects in pictures and asked people to give their first impressions, they noted similar patterns of discrimination against guys with poor oral health. Those with crooked, yellow or missing teeth were judged to be of limited intelligence (!), low class, bad parents, less professional, less physically beautiful and lacking social skills! Wow! This means that bad teeth might prevent otherwise qualified candidates from getting better jobs or promotions!
There is a social cost of going without dental care, too. Numerous studies show a strong correlation between appearance and income. Research has found that "better than average" looking people earn 5% to 10% more. Most studies say that your smile is the first thing others see when they form their first impression of you, and that makes more sense here.
Your oral health is very important and can be a first chance for your dentist to find other health problems before your doctor can, they say that the mouth is a mirror of your overall health. Fortunately, there are ways to have wonderful teeth, a great Smile and good oral health without having to pay too much. We take most PPO and HMO insurance, we have affordable procedures and great no interest payment plans with CareCredit, so schedule your appointment today!

Are old amalgam/mercury fillings toxic?

Yes, mercury is toxic and it makes up to 50% of the fillings composition. You can make an argument that not much is released in your mouth in normal conditions, but grinding your teeth alone scraps a little, right? And some people are more sensitive than others, we've seen huge improvements and healing in some of our patients after the mercury in their mouth was removed. If you break a fluorescent tube or bulb in your house you are supposed to open the windows and ventilate properly, but having more mercury than a bulb in your mouth is somehow fine. We are not supposed to eat fish more than twice a week to keep the toxic mercury levels low, but having new fillings made with mercury (yes, they still make those since are the only ones covered by insurance!) is somehow fine. OK, if you need to do more research or want to find out more about it please do so, but if you are ready to replace those old, dark, mercury filled spots on your molars in a way that is safe for you as a patient, for the dental staff and for the environment please give us a call. We use special suction tips that cover your tooth and attract particles so they don't end up in your mouth. You will wear a mask and an Oxygen supply so you don't inhale those particles either (and so are the Doctor and the Assistants). They use special grade filters masks that keep out the mercury particles. Also, there is special filter vacuum close to the working area, so no toxic particles are released in the office, that one is on all the time during your visit. After the old filling removal and tooth treatment you receive a tooth-colored filling that is barely visible and above all non-toxic, perfect for your new brighter, beautiful smile!
